A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE QUAICH

Flasks, Quaichs and Tankards have all been used as drinking vessels for many centuries. Traditionally produced in pewter, they were later manufactured from other metals. Our Whisky Flasks, Quaichs and Tankards are all crafted in the finest pewter or stainless steel.
The Quaich in particular has a unique history, as it is the traditional Scottish cup of friendship, being used to offer a guest a welcome drink, usually whisky.
The word ‘Quaich’ is derived from the Gaelic word "cuach". Quaichs were originally made of wood, of a shallow circular shape, with a pair of small handles projecting from opposite sides of the rim.
Towards the end of the seventeenth century they began to be made in metal - pewter or silver and gold - and were often highly decorated with traditional motifs.
Quaichs today remain highly popular. They are often used as favours at weddings, being presented to all at the top table, a symbol of the shared love and partnership of the hosts.
Quaichs are a prized possession of all people with a love of Scotland, having kept their simple but beautiful shape and friendly purpose.
