It is known as a hardy breed, due to the rugged nature of its native Scottish habitat, and is capable of surviving on extremely course grass and plants.
The meat of the Highland Cow is much healthier than most breeds as it is leaner, due to the fact it gets most of its insulation from the thick shaggy coat rather than subcutaneous fat.
